International Museum Studies Program

The University of Gothenburg offers an MS in International Museum Studies; the program is a collaboration with the Museum of World Culture.

The Master's program in International Museum Studies combines museum theory and practice through taught courses, qualified work experience in the museum sector and the writing of a Master's dissertation. The students are admitted to the program as a whole and after successful completion will be awarded a Master of Science in International Museum Studies. The program explores key issues in contemporary museums and galleries. It offers useful tools for scientific, critical reflection over the roles of museums in society and history. It also helps you to develop skills that will increase your ability to get employment in the cultural sector. These include critical reasoning, team working, problem solving and inter-cultural understanding.

The aspect of Internationalism is central to this program, and arises from three main strands. The students come from all over the world and we aim to recruit as diverse a student body as we can. The content of the programme aims to present examples and case studies from a broad international perspective. Student backgrounds are equally diverse, including architects, designers, conservators, biologists, educationalists, archaeologists and political scientists. The three main themes that permeate the whole program are Communication, Intercultural Perspectives and Co-operation and Inclusion.

The master of Museology provides graduates with a wide range of theoretical knowledge, an academic attitude towards museology combined with applied professional competencies, equipping them for careers at policy-making, curatorial or managerial level within heritage organizations. Making the decision to study at the Reinwardt Academy means opting for intensive contact with cultural heritage – a heritage that is visible not only in objects, but in stories and recollections too. Students at the Reinwardt Academy are curious about heritage and aim to develop this curiosity to a professional level. Student develop skills which will enable them to actively take part in the public discourse about heritage and to look at heritage from a wide range of perspectives.

The master's degree program combines a high academic level with practical skills and is based on the theoretical and practical experience of lecturers, students and museum staff. The academic development of museology is closely connected with current developments in the heritage and museum field. The Master of Museology is based on a broad definition of museums. Without wishing to exclude traditional museums, the programme focuses heavily on new approaches. The use of the term museology, rather than museum studies, is not only a reference to an academic foundation but is also intended to stress the fact that the focus is not on institutional frameworks: the programme offers students the opportunity to reflect more deeply on – and to experiment with – new visions of heritage and its role in society.

Several degree options ranging up to an MPhil or a PhD in research may be earned in one of several programs of museum, galley, and heritage studies that are offered in the School of Arts and Culture.

The International Centre for Cultural and Heritage Studies (ICCHS) is a leading academic centre for research and teaching in museum, gallery, and heritage studies. The taught postgraduate programs are vocational, providing students from all over the world with the knowledge, skills and understanding required to work in a variety of roles, from curators, education officers and managers to cultural policy makers. The programs benefit from the Center's experience in and engagement with the museum, gallery and heritage sector: it works closely with sector professionals both in the delivery of teaching and on research initiatives and on providing advice and consultancy for the sector.

Students develop a holistic view of the sector, focusing on everything from ancient castles to contemporary art galleries; after this, students specialize in specific areas. Students are equipped for work both in single areas (e.g. art or history curatorship) and between different kinds of organizations.

Throughout the degree, you will examine diverse of museum theory and practice, visit museums, galleries and cultural organisations, and have many opportunities to discuss ideas and issues with professionals and academics in the field. One of the most popular aspects of the AGMS is the work placement that you undertake in a museum or gallery. Each placement involves a minimum of 20 days work on a specific project, such as exhibition developmoent, collections management, or education programme. Many students find this such a positive experience that they carry on working in their museum when the work placement has finished, and each year a few students are offered jobs by their placement hosts.

Program entails the study of museums, their history, purpose and contemporary development.  Taught modules on the Theory and Practice of Museums are balanced with practical projects based either on the museum collections of this 600-year-old university, or at a local museum or gallery. Structured visits are an essential part of the programme and we are well placed for visiting museums, art galleries, historic houses, ships and other heritage sites.

A one-year full-time Graduate Diploma/MLitt course is aimed at students wanting to start a career in museum or gallery work, and at those looking for a mid-career change. Although the course is based in the School of Art History, applicants can have a degree in any subject. An essential and rewarding aspect of this programme is the opportunity for students to work together to create an exhibition at the University's Gateway Gallery or the St Andrews Museum.

A part-time version of the Graduate Diploma/MLitt course, which is run every two years, is aimed at museum and gallery employees (or committed volunteers) who wish to study while continuing with their work. Much of the coursework is done in the students' own workplaces, but participants come to St Andrews for four one-week residential schools over two years. Completion of a dissertation takes a further five months.
